Film Africa is the Royal African Society’s annual festival celebrating the best African cinema from across the continent and the diaspora. This year, we are proud to be launching Film Africa Young Audiences: an educational programme of screenings of features films, animation and documentaries by filmmakers from Africa and the African diaspora for schools.

All screenings are followed by an interactive workshop. Admission is £3.50 per student and free for accompanying teachers.

Screenings take place at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre.

Tuesday 23 May: Felix
13-year-old Felix Xaba dreams of becoming a saxophonist like his late father.

Tuesday 5 September: Stories of our Lives
A beautifully rendered collection of narratives from LGBTI Kenyans.
Suitability: Age 16+.
Themes: inclusion, LGBTI rights, bullying, adolescence, Kenyan politics and human rights.

A coming of age tale set during the First World War.
Suitability: Age 9+ Primary Years 5 and 6; Secondary Years 7-11.
Subjects: History, Geography, Citizenship, French, English and World War 1.

Tuesday 7 November: Double Bill – Shakespeare Focus featuring Makibefo and KanyeKanye
Celebrating the influence of Shakespeare on African film, with two intriguing stories given a new twist.
Suitability: Years 7 – 13 (ages 11 – 19).
Subjects and themes: English, Media, Shakespeare.

Film is a key educational tool to engage, inspire and educate children, young people and their teachers. We celebrate the diversity of the African continent through cinema and aim to make the rich tapestry of African peoples, cultures and experiences more visible to young learners.
